BASCO, Batanes, Philippines – For ordinary tourists, the cost of flying to Batanes, located in the northernmost tip of the country, may be steep.
Still, daily flights of Philippine Airlines and Skyjet from Manila to the province are almost always fully booked.
The regular one-way air fare starts from P5,600 to P7,778, depending on how early one secures a booking.
Promo fare rates at P2,000 are available but during a limited time, mostly late at night.
While residents complain of the high cost of air fare, tourists don’t seem to mind.
“The beauty of Batanes is here to stay for those who can afford to come by plane,” National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council chief Alexander Pama told The STAR.
Pama, who recently visited the province along with his family, has kind words for the Ivatans, the natives of Batanes.
“They are respectful, trustworthy, hard-working and honest,” Pama said.
During his days with the Philippine Navy, Pama regularly visited the island.
He said since there has been no major tourism development, the island’s natural beauty is well preserved.
“Any tourist who vandalizes any area here will be easily caught and may find returning here difficult,” he said.
