MANILA, Philippines – Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island erupted anew on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said yesterday.
An explosion-type earthquake, which was felt at Intensity 2 in neighboring sitios and barangays, was recorded at 9:09 p.m., Phivolcs said in its latest bulletin.
Sulfuric odor was reported at La Carlota City Volcano Observatory, the agency added.
The event was not visually observed due to thick clouds covering the summit, Phivolcs said.
Alert Level 1 remains hoisted over Kanlaon Volcano, which means it is showing abnormal activity.
Phivolcs warned the public against entering the permanent danger zone due to possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions. Pilots have been advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s crater.
Phivolcs raised the alert status of Kanlaon from 0 to 1 after a minor steam explosion on Nov. 23.
