3 killed in Compostela Valley blast
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Three persons were killed while 14 soldiers were wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) believed planted by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels exploded in Mabini, Compostela Valley over the weekend.
The fatalities included a trooper, a militiaman and a civilian. They were among a group conducting peace and development outreach program in Barangay Cabuyoan when the explosion occurred, according to the Army’s 10th Infantry Division (ID).
The military condemned the attack, that also left 14 soldiers wounded.
It said the NPA violated the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law and the UN Convention against the use of landmines.
Officials of the 10th ID said the incident would not discourage the soldiers from performing their duties and mission to make Compostela Valley peaceful and conducive for development.
“We will continue conducting the peace and development efforts and ensure that the rule of law is respected,” the officials said.
