MANILA, Philippines – The Office of the Ombudsman has indicted a former mayor of Sumisip town in Basilan for the delay or non-payment of the workers’ contributions to the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and Pag-IBIG Fund.
The ombudsman said former mayor Haber Amin Asarul and municipal treasurer Camlian Borjal also failed to remit to the Bureau of Internal Revenue the income taxes deducted from the salaries of the employees.
The respondents will be charged for violations of the GSIS Act of 1997, the Home Development Mutual Fund Law and the National Internal Revenue Code.
Investigation conducted by the anti-graft agency showed the municipal government failed to remit the GSIS contributions from October 2007 to May 2008, while contributions for June 2008 to May 2009 were remitted late.
Anti-graft investigators said Asarul and Borjal delayed the remittance for the Pag-IBIG Fund from October 2007 to January 2009 and from March to May 2009.
The municipal government was also late in remitting the income taxes to the BIR from July 2007 to May 2009.
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales directed the Commission on Audit in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to conduct a special audit on the cash accounts of Sumisip covering July 2007 to July 2009.
