‘Lights on for 86.2 percent of households by June 2015’
MANILA, Philippines - The government expects the electrification of 86.2 percent of households at the end of President Aquino’s term in June next year.
“As of end-November last year, the DOE (Department of Energy) achieved 80 percent of the target. Reaching the 90 percent goal by 2016 is almost in the bag,” said former energy secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla.
Petilla said this means 19.55 million households would have electricity by next year compared to only 14.54 million households in 2010.
The 26th status report of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act showed that Luzon has the highest household electrification at 89.3 percent. Mindanao has the lowest at 56.3 percent.
The DOE has implemented various projects to provide electricity to more households, including sitio electrification and barangay line enhancement programs.
