Cop shot dead near police station

BATANGAS, Philippines – A 36-year old police officer was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in Batangas City on Saturday night.

Police Officer 3 Jessie Laisa was walking toward his car parked near the police sub-station in Barangay Alangilan where he was assigned, when he was shot at past 11 p.m.

Laisa was declared dead on arrival at the Batangas Medical Center.

The assailant fled in a car parked several meters away from the crime scene, according to Batangas police director Senior Superintendent Omega Jireh Fidel.

Investigators recovered three bullet shells for an M16 rifle at the crime scene.

Police are checking video footage taken by closed-circuit television cameras installed in the area to identify the assailant.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive for the killing.
