DILG hit for ‘double standard’ in serving dismissal orders

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) yesterday criticized the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for double standard in serving dismissal orders against erring public officials.

“They immediately enforce the order when the respondent is an opponent and delay it if it’s their ally,” UNA spokesman Mon Ilagan said in a statement.

Ilagan cited the dismissal by the Office of the Ombudsman of Capiz Gov. Victor Tanco Sr. and his son Vladimir III for allegedly extorting money from a contractor.

The Tancos are allies of the Aquino administration.

Ilagan said the DILG Region 6 office is clarifying with the ombudsman if Tanco’s case is covered by a doctrine that might result in the reversal of the ruling.

He said this was not how the DILG served the dismissal order against Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay, noting the mayor was still entitled to an appeal.

The camp of Vice President Jejomar Binay has criticized the DILG for “overkill” in serving the dismissal order against Junjun.

“It’s obvious the DILG is following different rules in enforcing orders,” Ilagan said.
