Sinkhole gobbles up house in Benguet

Artemio Dumlao - The Philippine Star

ITOGON, Benguet, Philippines – A sinkhole measuring around 150 meters wide has gobbled up a house and threatened to swallow three more houses in Sitio Camangaan in Barangay Virac here.

At least 41 families were evacuated to the Virac Elementary School, to avoid casualties, Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan said yesterday.

Palangdan blamed the old diversion tunnel of a mining company for the sinkhole.

Experts from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in the Cordillera Region visited the scene yesterday to conduct an investigation.

“Let us wait for their investigation report,” MGB-CAR chief Faye Apil said.
