ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Torrential rains triggered a landslide that blocked the highway of Buug town in Zamboanga Sibugay at dawn yesterday.
Town police chief Senior Inspector Sam Bael said a huge portion of a hill in Barangay Basalem collapsed at around 2 a.m.
No one was reported injured or killed in the incident, as the area was uninhabited.
Gov. Wilter Palma said the landslide stranded hundreds of commuters, as the road was impassable to all types of vehicles.
“The provincial engineering office and the Department of Public Works and Highways were clearing the highway of mud and rocks,” Palma said.
He said they expected the clearing operation to be completed by yesterday afternoon.
