MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday raised signal number one over Batanes Group of Islands as typhoon “Jenny” moves further from the country.

Public storm signal one was raised by the weather bureau to warn the residents of Batanes of Jenny’s effect in the next 36 hours, according to weather forecaster Manny Mendoza in an interview with dzMM.

As tropical storm Jenny moves in a west northwest direction, it intensified and brings maximum sustained winds of up to 160 kilometer per hour and gustiness of up to 195 kph.

At 12 noon, Jenny’s eye was located 555 kilometer East Northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.

The typhoon also enhances the southwest monsoon or “habagat” causing rains over South Luzon and Visayas. Luzon and Western Visayas are also expected to experience light to moderate rains.

PAGASA said the thunderstorm is currently affecting portions of Zamboanga del Norte, Bukidnon, Lanao del Sur, Misamis Occidental, Davao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur which may persist for the next two hours while the rest of the country may have isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms.

In its advisory, PAGASA advised fisherfolks not to venture out over the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon and over the eastern seaboard of Luzon and Visayas and the seaboards of Caraga.

The weather bureau further called on the public to take precautionary measures against heavy rains, strong winds, lightning and possible flashfloods or landslides.

Typhoon Jenny will not make landfall and is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibiity by Tuesday afternoon.
