MANILA, Philippines - Several groups of fisherfolks, port workers and operators in Navotas City are readying for another round of protests against the implementation of newly-amended Fisheries Code.
Last month, the groups staged a fish holiday and a 5,000-strong protesters trooped to Mendiola in Manila to condemn new fees and fines on fish operators, workers among other fishing-related policies.
The groups said that the amendments to the Fisheries Code were railroaded in Congress without any public consultation on affected sectors.
On Saturday afternoon, some 600 fishermen and operators will hold a public consultation calling to intensify their campaign to scrap the newly-amended Fisheries Code.
During the activity, they will also tear 500 copies of the Fisheries Code to symbolize the junking of the anti-poor law.
