Nigeria gives $300,000 to Yolanda survivors

Pia Lee-Brago - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Nigeria has donated $300,000 and construction materials for survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said yesterday.

Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman received the donation from Chargé d’ Affaires Buba Tekune of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in simple ceremonies at the DSWD office on Thursday.

Tekune  conveyed the Nigerian government’s desire to help Yolanda victims and expressed hope the donation would help alleviate their suffering.

Soliman said the donation, part of which would be used to procure water tanks for families given permanent housing, would boost the government’s rehabilitation efforts.

President Aquino had directed the Cabinet to expedite the implementation of rehabilitation projects covering infrastructure, housing, livelihood and social services in all Yolanda-affected areas amid concerns by a special envoy of the United Nations that the attention on those rendered homeless was “waning.”
