Troops wounded in clashes with Abus given medals

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – The soldiers who were wounded in encounters with Abu Sayyaf bandits received medals and commendations from Armed Forces chief Gen. Hernado Iriberri on Friday.

Two of the soldiers were among the seven Army troopers wounded in the assault by members of the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion against about 100 Abu Sayyaf bandits  in Sitio Marang, Barangay Buanza, Indanan, Sulu on Wednesday.

A junior officer wounded in a firefight with another group of Abu Sayyaf bandits in Upper Baiwas in Sumisip, Basilan was also given military honors.

“It is difficult to get such medal,” Iriberri said, noting that he has not received any in his combat career.

“Seeing the wounded soldiers makes me feel proud…they show their dedication in our campaign to bring peace in this area,” he added.

At least 15 Abu Sayyaf members were killed in the assault that led to the rescue of two Coast Guard personnel held captive by the bandits. 

Iriberri had commended Western Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero for the success of the military offensive against the Abu Sayyaf. 

He expressed optimism that the ongoing military operations would result in the recovery of the remaining captives of the Abu Sayyaf.

Nine hostages, including six foreigners, remain in the hands of the bandits.
