MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said it will deploy an additional 20 disaster response storage units in strategic locations in the metropolis.
The MMDA has intially prepositioned 22 container vans, or disaster response equipment-filled storage units (DREFSUs), in strategic areas like Edsa corner Roxas Boulevard, Edsa-Ortigas Avenue, Balintawak-Cloverleaf, Tandang Sora Avenue in Quezon City, Navotas, Valenzuela, Abad Santos and Nagtahan in Manila.
Each van contains 56 different tools and personal safety equipment which can be used for rescuing people who maybe trapped in collapsed structures following a strong earthquake.
Should a 7.2-magnitude earthquake occur, most of the people who may die or hurt are under collapsed buildings, according to the Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study.
"It is important to have the right tools and the right training to save more lives," MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino said.
Also inside the vans are 20 safety boxes filled with tools such as screw drivers, pliers, hammers, claw bars, shovels, hacksaws and bolt cutters. Tents as well as hardhats, safety googles, raincoats, and first aid kits with medicines and water containers are also included.
The prepositioning of the DREFSUs is part of MMDA's Oplan Metro Yakal earthquake response plan.
Under the plan, some 6,000 MMDA employees and volunteers will be mobilized for disaster response operations.
