Ex-mayor indicted for delayed remittance of GSIS premiums

Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - For failing to remit the insurance premiums of the municipal employees on time, a former town mayor and treasurer in Tawi-Tawi was ordered charged before the Sandiganbayan yesterday.

The Office of the Ombudsman ordered former Simunul town mayor Benzar Tambut and Frieda Inni charged for violating Republic Act 8291 or The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Act of 1997.

Graft probers said the municipal government failed to remit the workers’ GSIS contributions amounting to P4.9 million from February 2006 to May 2010.

The local government was reportedly late in remitting the premiums within the 30-day allowable period for 22 times, and failed to remit thrice.

RA 8291 states that the heads of offices and personnel involved in the collection of contributions and other accounts due to GSIS are liable for failure, refusal or delay to remit within 30 days from due date.
