MANILA, Philippines - A police escort was wounded after a group of gunmen fired on the convoy of Agusan del Norte Governor Ma. Angelica Rosedell Amante-Matba Thursday morning in the province.
A radio report said that Police Office 1 Vincent Salvador, a member of the Provincial Public Safety Company, sustained a gunshot wound on his left arm during the ambush.
Matba, along with Nasipit town mayor Mayor Enrico Corvera and other police escorts, were unharmed, reports added.
Initial police investigation showed that Matba's convoy came from a turnover of a school building and was on her way home around 11:30 a.m. when gunmen fired on them at Purok 8, Sitio Mimbahandi, Barangay Camagong.
The gunmen, believed to be members of the New People's Army, scampered away after policemen returned fire.
Police are still investigating the incident.
