MANILA, Philippines - Earth Hour, a global movement led by the World Wide Fund for Nature, will provide portable solar lamps to residents of Beton Island in Palawan.
“This year, Earth Hour will fund the Gift of Light. Solar lamps rely on the power of the sun, eliminating the need to buy fuel. We’re teaching communities to veer away from fossil fuel, the burning of which contributes to climate change,” Climate Change Unit and Earth Hour Philippines head Gia Ibay said.
Fishing communities in the northern Palawan island rely only on kerosene lamps.
Ibay said Earth Hour would also provide solar lamps for Mangyans and forest rangers protecting the Iglit-Baco Mountain Range in Occidental Mindoro.
