Ilocos vice mayor survives slay try

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte, Philippines – A town vice mayor here survived an assassination attempt Wednesday afternoon.

Rommel Labasan of Pinili town was driving his service vehicle on his way to Batac City when he noticed two men on a motorcycle following him along the Manila North Road in Currimao town.

Labasan told police he sped off when he saw one of the suspects drew and pointed a gun at his vehicle.

In a radio  interview, Labasan said the suspects tried to chase him until he entered the premises of the Batac City Jail.

Police conducted a followup operation that led to the arrest of one of the suspects in Barangay Baay. The suspect was detained at the Batac City police station.

Labasan said he has been receiving death threats prior to the incident.
