Baler bans smoking, drinking on beaches

Ding Cervantes - The Philippine Star

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines – People can no longer smoke or drink alcoholic beverages on beaches and other coastal areas of Baler town in Aurora.

Baler Mayor Nelianto Bihasa said the ban, based on an ordinance he signed recently, aims to prevent trouble and drowning, as well as to maintain cleanliness along the beaches.

The ordinance was authored by Councilor Meinardo Tropicales.

First-time offenders get off with a warning while a second and third offense will merit fines of P1,500 and P2,500, respectively. Those who commit a fourth offense will be jailed.

Local and foreign tourists love Baler beaches for their waves, which are ideal for surfing.
