Bulacan marks 116th anniversary of Malolos Republic

Ramon Efren Lazaro - The Philippine Star

MALOLOS, Philippines – It’s a special non-working holiday in Bulacan today as it marks the 116th anniversary of the first Philippine Republic or the Malolos Republic.

This year’s theme is “Lakas ng Republika sa Harap ng Nagbabagong Panahon Tungo sa Daang Matuwid.”

Emilio Aguinaldo took his oath as the first president of the country at the Barasoain Church here on Jan. 23, 1899.

Malacañang has declared this date a holiday under Proclamation 944 signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.

The National Historical Commission confirmed that Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas will be the guest of honor in today’s activity.

The celebration coincides with the centennial of Guiguinto town.
