'Amang' leaves 2 dead

MANILA, Philippines - Two persons were killed during the height of tropical storm "Amang," the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Sunday night.
In its 8 p.m. update, the NDRRMC said that Kristel Mae Padasas, 26, a volunteer worker for the Catholic Relief Service stationed in Salcedo, Eastern Samar, died after she was hit by soundbox due to strong winds.
Another fatality, Domingo Tablate,69, of Antipolo del Sur, Virac, Cataduanes, on the other hand, drowned.
Meanwhile, the NDDRMC also reported that almost 8,000 people or nearly 2,000 families were affected by Amang in regions 5,7, and 8.
Of the total affected population, around 1,760 families or more than 6,500 persons are being served in 21 evacuation centers, the state emergency response agency added.
In the Bicol region, the provincial government of Albay has suspended classes in all school levels while local government units of Catanduanes and and Sorsogon only canceled classes in primary and secondary levels due to bad weather.
Amang also brought heavy rains which flooded several areas in Regions 5 and 8,the NDRRMC said.
