NDF declares 13-day truce for cops’ release

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The National Democratic Front (NDF) has declared a ceasefire for 13 days in parts of Surigao del Norte and Agusan del Norte to pave the way for the release of the three policemen kidnapped by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels.

NDF Northeastern Mindanao spokesperson Maria Malaya said the ceasefire, which started on Wednesday, will end on Jan. 19.

“This is a supplemental ceasefire to the 10-day ceasefire declared by the NDF at the national level,” Malaya said.

Communist rebels declared a ceasefire from Jan. 15 to 19 during the visit of Pope Francis.

The 13-day ceasefire covers the towns of Claver, Bacuag, Alegria and Gigaquit in Surigao del Norte and  Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte.

Police Officers 1 Democrito Polvorosa and Marichel Contemplo of the Alegria  town police and Junrie Amper of the Malimono police were snatched in separate incidents last year.

The NDF has ordered the release of the three captives in deference to the request of their family and loved ones, but did not say when and where they will be freed.
