MMDA traffic constable faces raps for extortion

MANILA, Philippines - Police sued a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic enforcer before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office for allegedly extorting money from a motorist on Wednesday.

MMDA traffic constable Edelito Corilla, now detained at the Quezon City Police District station 9 in Anonas, is facing direct bribery charges.

The criminal charge against Corilla stemmed from a complaint from closed van driver George Basubas.

Initial investigation showed that Basubas was on board his vehicle when he was flagged down by Corilla at the corner of Commonwealth and University avenues in Quezon City around 1 a.m.

Instead of giving him a ticket for the violation, Corilla allegedly asked for P300 from Basubas.

After negotiations,  Basubas handed to Corilla P200. The driver then went straight to the  Quezon City Anti Crime Group which later nabbed Corilla and three other MMDA traffic enforcers identified as Dominador Panopio, Jop Carles, and Carlito Llaneta.

Police did not file any charges against the three after Basubas cleared them of any participation in Corilla's actions.
