MANILA, Philippines - The driver of the sports utility vehicle (SUV) who ran over a Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic constable last week along EDSA is now facing criminal charges before a Quezon City court.
City Assistant Prosecutor Corazon Romano has filed charges of reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injuries and driving with an expired driver’s license against Mark Ian Libunao, the driver of an Isuzu Sportivo, who fled after running over traffic enforcer Sonny Acosta.
Romano recommended a bail bond of P8,000 for the provisional release of Libunao.
Libunao was reportedly with the owner of the SUV, Dante Borgueta of San Miguel, Bulacan, when the incident happened.
Acosta sustained severe injuries in the head and other parts of his body and is now in comatose condition at the intensive care unit of a private hospital.
MMDA Traffic Discipline Office head lawyer Crisanto Saruca said Acosta, one of the more than 400 enforcers deployed to EDSA to help ease Christmas traffic, flagged down Libunao for committing a traffic violation inside a bus loading bay last Friday morning.
Instead of stopping, Libunao allegedly sped off hitting and dragging Acosta under the SUV several meters away.
Acosta’s buddy constable Liberty Tongco was around during the incident and was able to take down the SUV’s plate number which was subsequently traced to Borgueta as the owner.
