4-hour power outage hits Mindanao

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Parts of Mindanao have been gripped anew by power outages for as long as four hours for the past several weeks.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines said yesterday power supply was at 1,273 megawatts as against the peak demand of 1,404 MW or a shortfall of 131 MW.

A power curtailment of 150 MW was implemented in Mindanao as the capacity of Agus and the Pulangi hydropower plants is down to 442 MW from its installed capacity of 982 MW.

The situation reportedly stemmed from a reduction in power capacity due to low water inflow.

Mindanao has been dependent on hydroelectric power supplied by the Pulangi River in Bukidnon and Lake Lanao in Marawi City.
