NGO official slain in Iloilo gun attack
ILOILO CITY, Philippines – An officer of an international non-governmental organization (NGO) was shot dead in Estancia town, Iloilo Thursday afternoon.
Andrew Gil Peñafrancia, 24, was walking toward his boarding house in Barangay Cano-an, when motorcycle-riding men shot him several times.
Peñafrancia was declared dead on arrival at the Jesus Colmenares Memorial District Hospital due to five gunshot wounds in the head and body.
Investigation showed Peñafrancia had just been promoted as Action Against Hunger fleet manager of ACF International, a humanitarian organization committed to end world hunger.
The NGO holds office in Barangay Tabu-an, Estancia to help communities affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda. It has been hiring trucks to deliver projects to Iloilo and Capiz provinces.
Town police chief Senior Inspector Lorenez Losaria said the victim reportedly figured in a spat with one of the truck owners recently.
Losaria said aside from job-related angle, investigators are looking into other possible motives for Peñafrancia’s killing.
