WATCH: Cebu boy, 7, climbs tree to escape 'Queenie' flood

Louis Bacani - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Tropical Depression "Queenie" dumped heavy rains and triggered floods in parts of Visayas and Mindanao on Thursday.

Among the areas affected by Queenie was Malabuyoc town, Cebu province, where the overflown Saliring River caused flooding in nearby areas.

The Cebu provincial government posted on Facebook a video showing Jason Baldado, 7, climbing a coconut tree to keep himself safe from the flood of the swelling river.

The boy was eventually rescued but his mother, Alona, was found dead, according to the Cebu government.

The agency said heavy rains due to the tropical depression triggered widespread flooding in some areas in Southern Cebu.

"Queenie" crossed Southern Cebu and Negros Oriental this morning and Southern Negros Occidental before noon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

The weather bureau expects Queenie to be north of Puerto Princesa City by Friday and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday.
