DPWH gives cash aid to slain soldiers’ kin

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has provided financial assistance to the families of the soldiers who were killed by Abu Sayyaf bandits while guarding a road project in Basilan.

Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero said P120,000 had been sent to the Army’s 64th Infantry Battalion.

“A P20,000 check will be sent to each of the legal dependents of our fallen heroes,” Guerrero said in a statement.

1Lt. Jun Corpuz, Sgt. Tranquilino Germo, Pfc. Rolando Entera Jr., Pfc. Freddie Pandoy, Pfc. Raffy Canuto and Pfc. Mark Singson were killed in an encounter with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sumisip, Basilan last Nov. 2.

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Gregorio Catapang Jr. thanked the DPWH “for honoring our soldiers.”

“We will continue to support the government’s effort to finish the Basilan circumferential road which would surely bring progress and prosperity for the people of Basilan,” he said. – Alexis Romero, Roel Pareño
