MANILA, Philippines - Cebu City Rep. Raul del Mar has proposed the construction of skyways in his city to ease traffic congestion.
In filing Bill 5142, Del Mar said traffic jams in Cebu City are comparable to those in Metro Manila.
“Current economic activities in the city of Cebu put in sharp focus the development potentials of the area toward making it a prime growth center and more. This kind of potential and this kind of development, however, give rise to some areas of concern,” he said.
He said the improvement of existing infrastructure would not be enough to alleviate the traffic situation given the city’s economic growth and the increase in its population.
Del Mar’s bill directs the Department of Public Works and Highways to conduct feasibility and engineering studies and start constructing skyways in Cebu City.
It mandates the National Economic and Development Authority to endorse the construction of skyways for funding either through foreign assistance or private sector participation under the public-private partnership program.
