Troops seize another Abu camp
MANILA, Philippines - Government troops yesterday discovered another camp of Abu Sayyaf bandits in Patikul town in Sulu, as they continue raids against the terrorist group.
The latest find brings to 16 the number of Abu Sayyaf camps seized so far by the military since German hostages Stefan Viktor Okonek and Henrike Dielen were released by the bandits last Oct. 17, allegedly after payment of a ransom.
Col. Allan Arrojado, chief of the Joint Task Group Sulu, said the camp is located in Barangay Danag and was seized by members of the Army’s 35th Infantry Battalion at around 9:30 a.m.
“It has six bunkers with a training area,” Arrojado said in a text message to The STAR.
Soldiers recovered combat uniforms, documents and two flags with markings “Sultaniyah Sulu Darul Islam” and “Happy 60th founding anniversary Sulu Darul Islam.”
Of the 16 camps seized by the military, five are in Barangay Kabontakas while four are in the vicinity of Mount Sinumaan.
Two camps were discovered in Barangays Danag and Upper Kamuntayan while there had been one camp in each of the villages of Buhanginan, Maligay and Mt. Bagsak.
