MANILA, Philippines - The Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) will not support calls for impeachment proceedings against Vice President Jejomar Binay, an official of the political party said Monday.
NPC secretary general and Batangas Rep. Mark Llandro Mendoza branded the calls by some groups to initiate impeachment proceedings against Binay as "counter productive."
Mendoza also called on his colleagues in the House of Representatives to engage themselves in more productive endeavor instead of joining moves to oust the second highest official of the land.
"The Aquino administration only has a little over two years left in office and we hope that its allies in Congress should instead focus on the tasks at hand and not dabble too much on politics," Mendoza said in a statement.
He said that the impeachment proceedings against Binay is just a waste of government resources.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima earlier said that the results of the probe on the allegations of corruption against the vice president could be used as basis for the filing of an impeachment complaint against him.
Binay is now under fire for the alleged overpriced construction of the Makati parking building.
The vice president has also been accused of having ill-gotten wealth during the hearings of the Senate Blue Ribbon sub-committee, which was formed to investigate the alleged overpriced parking building.
Binay's camp has repeatedly denied the allegations and claimed that attacks are part of a demolition campaign against the vice president to prevent him from winning the presidential election in 2016.
