Cabanatuan has 5,000 dead voters

Manny Galvez - The Philippine Star

CABANATUAN CITY, Philippines –The voters’ list in this city has at least 5,000 dead people, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has discovered.

Election officer Leo Navarro said the deceased voters, including a centenarian and 13 who were aged 90 or older, are being purged from the list.

“We are now in the process of verifying the list of dead voters and securing death certificates from relatives,” he said.

Navarro said the civil registrar is also helping identify the dead voters in the list.

The Comelec has reiterated its call for voters to update their records using the biometrics system. Biometrics data include a voter’s digital photograph, signature and fingerprint.

Last month, the Nueva Ecija provincial office of the Comelec warned that more than 200,000 voters in the province could lose their right to vote over their failure to update their records.
