4 rebels killed in Apayao clash

MANILA, Philippines - Government security forces on Friday killed four suspected communist rebels during a firefight in Apayao province.
Senior Inspector Rafael Tangonan, team leader of the joint elements of Apayao Provincial Public Safety Company and Provincial Infantry Battalion, said residents of Barangay Calayucay, Luna, Apayao sought their help on extortion by around 10 heavily armed men.
The encounter happened around 6 a.m. when government forces arrived in the area. The gunmen were reportedly New People's Army remnants of a group called Armadong Makikibakang Masa under Efren Arquillo.
After the clash, authorities recovered from the scene several high powered firearms, including an M16 assault rifle, an UZI machine pistol, a .38 revolver, two shotguns, two hand grenades, and assorted ammunition.
