Roel Pareño - The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – At least 18 construction workers became ill from suspected food poisoning after eating barracuda in a village here on Tuesday.

Police said the victims were brought to the Labuan District Hospital after complaining of severe stomach pain.

Eunice Zapasap, the hospital’s attending physician, said the victims suffered from diarrhea, vomiting, shortness of breath and dizziness.

Initial investigation showed the victims, who work at the Zamboanga Economic and Free Port Zone Authority, cooked the fish, but did not remove its innards.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources regional director Ahadulla Sajili said they have issued warnings against eating barracuda, which is poisonous.
