MANILA, Philippines - Telecommunications company Globe Telecom said yesterday it is providing financial and communications support for the rehabilitation and preservation of the Cabalan Watershed, a vital water source and one of the critical areas necessary to prevent flooding in Olongapo City.
“We want to educate the public about the importance of doing our part every day to create a greener and wonderful world, that is why we are actively engaging in partnerships with different organizations to ensure that our natural resources are properly taken care of,” said Fernando Esguerra, Globe’s corporate social responsibility director.
Apart from the financial assistance, Globe donated mobile phones and service identity module (SIM) cards to the Ulo ng Apo Mountaineering Club (UNAMC), which leads the Cabalan Watershed reforestation project.
The mobile phones will be used as hotlines for emergency situations while the SIM cards will be for the mountain guides.
Aside from the rehabilitation work, the project promotes alternative livelihoods through eco-tourism and provides capacity-building training to the community.
Globe is also helping protect and conserve the Cordillera mountain range in Northern Luzon and Arakan Valley in North Cotabato, Esguerra said.
