Canadian held on eve of Noy’s Davao visit

The Philippine Star

DAVAO CITY – Authorities invited for questioning a Canadian Muslim scholar, who has been banned from entering several countries, on the eve of President Aquino’s visit in Davao.

Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips, an Islamic religious teacher, was taken for questioning last Sunday three days after he arrived here, said Southern Mindanao regional police director Chief Superintendent Wendy Rosario.

Aquino arrived here Monday to address a meeting of the Philippine Business for Social Progress at the SMX Convention Center in SM Lanang Premier.

Rosario said Philips could be considered a threat to national security, noting a ban imposed on the Canadian in Australia, Bangladesh, Germany, Kenya, United Kingdom and the United States.

He said Philips was holding a lecture at a mosque in Barangay Maa when policemen invited him for questioning.

Philips is reportedly suspected of supporting terrorist groups.

The Bureau of Immigration in Southern Mindanao has asked the Police Regional Office-11 to take Philips into custody until he is deported.
