Man dies after ‘faith healer’ extracts teeth

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – A 28-year-old man from Manapla town, Negros Occidental died Thursday after an alleged faith healer extracted five of his teeth Wednesday, according to a report of ABS-CBN.

Jerry Aguirre died of septic embolism secondary to dental foci, which was caused by bacterial infection, according to his death certificate signed by Eriberto Jayme, municipal health officer of Manapla, the TV report added.

In an interview with Bombo Radyo, the victim’s sister, Jona dela Cruz, said her brother asked money from her on Wednesday to have his teeth extracted.

She said her brother looked weak when he got home, and she found him dead on his bed the next day.

The radio station said the victim might have been lured by the offer of the faith healer, who promised a lower fee with free dentures.

The faith healer, identified as Diosdado Mahilum, who faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, is reportedly known in the town as a maker of false dentures, according to radio reports.

Mahilum admitted that it was his first time to do a tooth extraction. He asked forgiveness from the victim’s family.
