Cavite declares state of calamity

MANILA, Philippines — The provincial government on Wednesday placed Cavite under a state of calamity on Wednesday after typhoon "Glenda" directly hammered the province, cutting off trees and knocking out power.

Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla said in a radio report that the entire province experienced power outage during the onslaught of the typhoon. Power in the province has not been restored in most areas as of this posting.

Three people, including an 11-month-old boy, have been confirmed dead in the province. The boy died after being hit by a wall in a house, officials said.

Cavite was among the areas placed by weather bureau PAGASA under Signal No. 3. The province was hit by up to 180 kilometers per hour of wind as the typhoon was crossing Luzon.

Despite intense rains in several towns, no major floods affected the province and its major roads remained clear.

Camarines Sur and Albay provinces earlier declared a state of calamity due to "Glenda."
