Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits Davao

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off Davao Occidental province on Monday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 106 kilometers southeast of Don Marcelino town at 3:39 p.m.

The depth of the quake, which was tectonic in origins, was recorded at 10 kilometers.

It was felt strongest at Intensity 4 in Governor Generoso town in Davao Oriental.

The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Glan town in Sarangani Province, in Mati City and Davao City; Intensity 2 in General Santos City; and Intensity 1 in M'lang, North Cotabato, Tupi town and Koronadal City in South Cotabato.

Phivolcs said it is expecting aftershocks.

The same area also encountered a significant earthquake in August 2007 with a magnitude of 6.4 and in May 2005 with a magnitude of 7.1, causing the deaths of two individuals due to landslides.
