DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines – Shellfish from the coastal waters of Bataan and Mandaon in Masbate and Irong-Irong Bay in Western Samar are still positive for red tide microorganisms, according to the latest bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). BFAR director Asis Perez said all types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from these areas are not safe for human consumption.

Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided they are fresh and washed thoroughly and their internal organs such as gills and intestines removed before cooking.
