Rare shark species found dead in CDO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – A dead megamouth shark which got entangled in a net in shallow waters here recently is off to a museum in Davao City.

Patrick Inotao, a technician of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources regional office, said the megamouth shark, a rare species, was 18 feet long and weighed 400 to 500 kilos.

Inotao said this is the third sighting of a megamouth shark in Misamis Oriental and that less than 50 sightings of the rare species have been recorded worldwide.

With the permission of BFAR-Region 10 under regional director Visa Tanb Dimerin, the shark’s bones and skin have been taken to Davao City to be assembled and preserved in the D’Bone Collector Museum for educational purposes.
