EDC trains Leyte media on disasters

ORMOC CITY, Philippines – The Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is taking further steps in preparing Leyte province, which was heavily devastated by Typhoon Yolanda last November, for disasters by training Tacloban and Ormoc City media in disaster preparedness.

This disaster preparedness workshop was held at Sabin Resort Hotel in Ormoc City last Thursday and was conducted by EDC disaster and crisis team head Ted Esguerra.

Also a member of the first Mt. Everest Philippine Team, Esguerra shared his knowledge in preparing for various types of disasters and in dealing with them in case they happen.

“Our aim is to help our stakeholders in Leyte to become crisis and disaster-ready, to help them save lives and that of their family and communities, ”said John Arnaldo, EDC vice president for corporate affairs.

In his talk, Esguerra said he could not overemphasize the role of media in crisis situations, saying the burden of spreading the right information is in their hands. “You are an elite group,” he said, “(and) the power is in your pen, your hands.”

EDC will also conduct the same workshop in its other partner communities in Leyte in the coming months.
