Taguig gov't launches monthly blood donation

Mike Frialde - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Taguig City government has started a monthly voluntary blood donation in coordination with the Philippine Blood Disease and Transfusion Center (Philippine Blood Center).

Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano said as part of the city government’s agreement with the Philippine Blood Center, Taguig will be conducting a monthly voluntary blood collection to provide city residents with safe and adequate blood supply.

“This partnership will help diminish deaths caused by blood loss because this will ensure that there will be enough blood in case of emergencies,” Mayor Cayetano said.

“Some people may consider donating blood as just a small act but for those in need of it, it is an extension of life,” Cayetano added.

Dr. Isaias Ramos, Taguig City Health Office chief, said donating blood is a healthy practice since it helps determine whether the donor has an illness or disease of any kind.

“It not only helps oneself but also others who are in need of blood transfusion,” he said.

Dr. Andres Bonifacio of the Philippine Blood Center added that Taguig’s partnership is a big and meaningful project for the blood center.

Bonifacio added that part of the collected blood will be given free of charge to the Taguig Pateros District Hospital (TPDH).

Cayetano, meanwhile, called on Taguig residents to participate in the voluntary blood drive.

“I encourage everyone to donate blood because without volunteers our community would not have enough blood supply. We should not wait until the need arises to help. It is our goal to have enough supply ready in times of need,” Mayor Cayetano said.
