Text2Teach brought to Sulu town

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom’s mobile learning program Text2Teach will be implemented this year in 15 elementary schools in Patikul, Sulu, one of the areas in the country with a high dropout rate.

“The T2T Alliance brought Text2Teach to Sulu not only to help improve quality of education in the province but also to serve as a catalyst for peace and development efforts,” said Fernando Esguerra, Globe’s corporate social responsibility director.

Globe selected Patikul town due to lack of core educational resources such as textbooks and regular teacher training in its public elementary schools, adding to low quality learning in the classroom and a high dropout rate of 50 percent.

“The Text2Teach training program is expected to boost teacher morale and enhance the learning environment in the classroom, with the end-goal of significantly lowering the dropout rate and significantly increasing the learning gains,” Esguerra said.

Through the program, 360 educational video materials on English, math, science and values education downloaded via Nokia Education Delivery, will be turned over to the schools.

The videos provide an effective visual aid for teachers and create an interactive, student-focused learning environment in the classroom, making the students eager to attend school.

It comes with lesson plans that are fully integrated into the basic education curriculum and created to meet local education guidelines and standards.

There are now at least 1,054 Text2Teach schools nationwide. Globe aims to add 1,407 more schools by the end of the year.
