P’sinan posts lower crime rate
LINGAYEN, Philippines – The number of crimes reported in Pangasinan went down in the first five months of this year as compared to the same period in 2013, the officer-in-charge of the provincial police reported yesterday.
Senior Superintendent Sterling Raymund Blanco told the provincial board members that they recorded 8,054 crimes from January to May this year, lower by 1,087 incidents recorded in the same period last year.
He said the index crimes were recorded at 3,952, lower by 291 from the 2013 record. The figure represents 2,638 cases of crimes against persons and 1,314 against property.
Blanco said motorcycle-riding criminals have been a major concern of the Pangasinan police, noting gun-for-hire groups and robbers use stolen motorcycles to evade arrest.
A total of 106 shootings perpetrated by motorcycle-riding men were recorded in the last five months while plain shooting was at 71. Of the number, 55 cases were solved while 51 remain under investigation.
Authorities, however, noted an increase in robberies with 94 cases, higher by 40 in 2013. About 27 cases were solved.
In the campaign against loose firearms, Blanco reported that a total of 66 operations were launched that resulted in the arrest of 76 persons and seizure of 73 assorted firearms and ammunition. He said about 455 wanted persons were arrested from January to May.
The Pangasinan police campaign against illegal drugs resulted in the arrest of 213 pushers and users and the seizure of shabu and marijuana.
