New school buildings welcome students in Taguig

Mike Frialde - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Some 140,000 students were welcomed back on Monday to new public school buildings in Taguig City, the city government said.

Taguig City Mayor Lani Cayetano said the local government constructed new school buildings for the use of the students this year.

“Our efforts to build new school and classrooms will help in reducing the class size in our schools,” Cayetano said.

“We are working hard to provide public schools with facilities that will enhance learning,” she added.

Built in time for the school opening is a four-storey building with 32 classrooms at the Taguig Elementary School in Barangay Sta. Ana, while a four-storey building with 20 classrooms is under construction at Eusebio Santos Elementary School in Barangay San Miguel.

Meanwhile, a four-storey building with 12 classrooms is currently being constructed at Silangan Elementary School while improvements for the four-storey school building that will soon house 36 classrooms for students of the Senator Renato Compañero Cayetano Memorial Science High School (SRCC) is ongoing.

The city has also been in constant coordination with the Department of Education Taguig-Pateros (DepEd-TaPat) Division to continuously support its infrastructure projects for the improvement of the city’s public schools.

The DepEd-TaPat spearheaded the construction of school buildings in Signal Village Elementary School, Signal Village National High School, Upper Bicutan Elementary School, Upper Bicutan National High School, Western Bicutan National High School and Bagumbayan National High School.

Meanwhile, Cayetano added that the local government has hired 350 new teachers, which in addition to the 238 already hired by the DepEd, will create a focus-based approach on educating students.

The local government earlier procured a total of 320 new air conditioning units to be installed in the city’s 34 public schools “to create a condition in which the children could concentrate effectively” along with the provision of new high-powered generators to avoid possible power interruptions come rainy season.

“We will continue to find ways to create an ideal learning environment for our students,” Caytetano said.

â€œThese ongoing projects for our school buildings are for the benefit of our constituents. It is a testament that when we make good use of our public funds, we can give to our people what is right and duly for them,” she added.
