5.7 quake jolts Southern Mindanao

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Southern Mindanao at 1:44 p.m. yesterday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) allayed fears that the quake, whose epicenter was traced 31 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental would trigger a tsunami as it had a depth of 113 kilometers.

The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, was felt at Intensity 4 in Davao City and Mati City, Davao Oriental; Intensity 3 in Bislig, Surigao del Sur and Tagum City; and Intensity 1 in Gingoog, Misamis Oriental. – Edith Regalado, Helen Flores
