105-MW Mindanao power unit back in operation

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The 105-megawatt turbine-electric generating unit of the STEAG State Power Inc. will be back in operation today, two months after it was put offline due to sustained damage.

STEAG spokesman Jerome Soldevilla told The STAR that the generating unit has been on a start-up process since yesterday. “Hopefully it would be synchronized Thursday,” he added.

The STEAG generating unit was supposed to be synchronized to the Mindanao power grid last May 4 but this was deferred as a series of comprehensive equipment tests was still needed.

Soldevilla also said the STEAG’s other 105-MW unit will be online on June 1. “So far, repair work on the other generating set is also on time,” he said.

Soldevilla said STEAG needs to ensure that the two generating units of its coal-fired power plant are in excellent condition before they are commissioned and brought back to the Mindanao power grid.
