MANILA, Philippines - One soldier was killed and six others were hurt in an ambush by suspected communist guerillas on Friday in Quirino, Ilocos Sur, the military said.
Maj. Emmanuel Garcia, chief of the Armed Forces 1st Civil Relations Group, said soldiers involved in development programs were attacked by 10 suspected rebels at about 4 a.m. in Barangay Malideg.
He said the soldiers were on board a military vehicle and were on their way to assist a road project when they were waylaid by the armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA).
The early morning attack left one soldier dead and six others wounded. The identities of the casualties have yet to be released.
Soldiers are now conducting pursuit operations against the suspected rebels behind the attack. – Ronald Mendoza with a report from A. Perez
