Magnitude 5.9 quake hits Vigan

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Vigan, Ilocos Sur before dawn Tuesday and was felt in several towns, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The agency said the quake occured at 4:45 a.m. and was tectonic in origin. The epicenter was traced at 70 kilometers southwest of Vigan and had a depth of 16 kilometers.

Intensity IV (moderately strong) was felt in some towns in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte including Vigan, Sinait, Paoay, Cadugao, San Juan, Macsingal, Sto. Domingo, San Il de Fonso, Bantay, Cauayan, Sta Catalina, Santa and Batac.

Intensity III (weak) was also felt in the municipalities of Narvacan, Sta. Maria, Burgos and San Esteban.

Intensity I was also reported in Pasay City.

Phivolcs said it is not expecting damage from the tremor but aftershocks may happen.
